What is OSTEO – ARTHRITIS ( SANDHIGATAVATA ) ?
Ayurvedic
sciences establish the degeneration of joint capsule, synovium and
the synovial fluid in the joints as a vata disorder. Being limited
to the joints called as sandhi it is termed as sandhigata vata. Treatment
techniques used for arthritis can include healthy diet and lifestyle
changes, ayurvedic herbal remedies and supplements, exercise, spiritual
pratices, yoga, massage, meditation and other healing modalities.
Ayurvedic
medicine uses plants (to include herbs and spices), foods and mind/body
exercises.
The ayurveda suggests that arthritis is the result of an excess of
ama and lack of agni. Ayurveda believes in categorizing of arthritis
into three types corresponding to vata, pitta, and kapha.
Ginger is advised as a remedy in ayurved for osteoarthritis.Ginger
(Zingiber officinale), obtained from the root of the ginger flower,

The
symptoms of osteoarthritis include:
- Pain,
aches and stiffness in the joints
- Enlargement
of the last joint of the fingers
- Bony
swelling in the joint
- Crackling
noises when the joint is moved
- Mild
inflammation in a joint; it is rheumatoid arthritis that causes
intense inflammation
- Loss
of joint mobility
What
are the treatment ?
The
treatment includes self relaxing measures. Yoga is a good ayurvedic

of osteo - arthritis.
