What
is impotence ?
Modern
sciences have defined impotence as an inability to perform the sexual
act, because of either a failure to initiate or sustain an erection
or a failure to ejaculate intravaginally.
The
incidence of impotence too is as common as infertility and is considered
many a times as infertility. Its exact aetiology and pathogenesis
being unknown, modern medicine has no effective drug for this condition.
Many
indigenous drugs are claimed to be effective and some of these claims
have been well-documented in scientific literature.
Many
of them are classified as aphrodisiacs. Some of these are , Bhanga
and, Orchis mascula, root extracts of Bombax malabaricum and Amaranthus
adscendens, Phalagrita, powdered root of Albizzia lebbek, Saffron,
nutmeg extract, pepper, clove and gandhak.
Most
of these agents are used in combinations. Local application of Jaiphal,
Lavanga, Pista and Nirgundi on the penis has been claimed to increase
vascularity and contractility.
This
apart ayurveda considers sexual functions as an important part of
a persons and life and puts it as a purpose of his existence.

is considered to be poor erectile functions or erectile dysfunction.
What
are the causes of impotence ?
Causes
of impotence are believed to be similar to infertilityand these include

Having
sex by compulsion with a person whom you do not like.
Eating
spicy, salty and hot food increase pitta and destroys shukra (semen).
Overindulgence
in sexual activities leads to shukra kshaya. It may lead to clibya
(impotency).
By
controlling sexual urges for longer duration leads to veeryaavarodha
(Obstruction of semen) and this leads to decreased libido.
Some
acquire the impotency by birth
A
person suffering from a chronic illness like tuberculosis, diabetes
or any other such disorder maya also be a cause of impotence.
