What
is dry skin ?
Dry
skin is also called xerosis. It is a common problem. The skin needs
moisture to stay smooth and supple, and retaining moisture is especially
difficult in winter. Central heating of home and other buildings is
very drying to the skin which is commonly seen in the western countries.
Simple
daily routines, such as bathing and towel drying, may actually remove
moisture from the skin. Modifying ones bathing routine helps preserve
skin moisture. Bathing provides the skin with moisture temporarily,
but it removes the skin's oily lipid layer and in the long run causes
more moisture loss than gain.
Ayurveda
believes it to be a vata imbalance created due to consumption of excess
of dry food, or dufficult to digest heavy food, and also improper
hygiene.
