What
Is Acidity?
Acid
or sour taste is a sign of Pitta disorders, usually indicating high
Pitta (fire) in the small intestine. There will be heartburn, belching
of sour fluids, perhaps nausea and vomiting.
Causes
are mainly dietary: too much spicy or sour food, too much greasy food,
alcohol or overeating in general. Excess intake of sweets, including
pastries, cakes, pies, can also cause hyperacidity; sugar causes fermentation
and acid production in the stomach, particularly if wrongly combined
with other food types.
What
is its treatment?
Anti-Pitta
diet is prescribed, with antacid food such as milk or ghee and emphasis
on such bland whole grains as basmati rice. Bananas should be avoided
as they have a sour post-digestive effect. Sour taste, as in pickles,
yogurt, wine etc., should be avoided.
Hyperacidity
can also occur with weak digestion. Food in the stomach ferment, producing
burning sensation. This is more common in Vata (air) and Kapha (water)
types.
